Beth Root
BETH ROOT
Trillium erectum/ Trillium pendulum
History and Folklore
A beautiful North American member of the Lily family, Beth Root was one of the favoured women's herbs among Native Americans. Not all of the active constituents have as yet been identified and so far Beth root is still a bit of a mystery in modern science. Historical accounts are reminiscent of Ginseng, praising the Native American uses of this herb as an aphrodisiac and general rejuvenator. Today it has become rare in some parts and it is no longer widely used.
Medicinal Uses:
Beth Root controls excessive or irregular menstruation, intermittent bleeding and period pains. It was also used to strengthen the uterus and ensure a speedy delivery. For this purpose it was taken only during the last month of pregnancy. It was also used to control excessive postpartum blood loss. Beth Root contains hormonal precursors, which the body can utilize if needed. It therefore has a great normalizing effect, which can be very useful during menopause. It is helpful for controlling excessive loss of blood associated with menopausal changes and can also be used for internal bleeding, e.g. intestinal bleeding or blood in the urine as well as for diarrhoea and dysentery. Beth Root can also be used as a douche for leucorrhoea and as a poultice for ulcers. It was also used externally as a poultice to treat mastitis, without actually having to stop the flow of milk.
CAUTION
Avoid during pregnancy. Do not use continuously.
Magical Uses:
Little is known about the magical use of this herb. Its distinctive threefold nature and its medicinal uses as plant for female issues indicate its sacred status as a herb of the triple goddess. Beth Root can be used to honour female creativity and the rites of passage that mark each of the three phases of the Goddess, but in particular it can be used to celebrate the mysteries of motherhood and childbirth.

CAUTION
We support the notion of taking responsibility for one's own well being and thus strive to make all herbs available for use at your own discretion. It should be noted however, that not all herbs are safe to use in all circumstances. Special cautions may apply when suffering from certain medical conditions, when taking synthetic prescription drugs and during pregnancy. Research and familiarize yourself with any herb you intend to use and make sure you are aware of all special cautions that may apply. The information given here is based on thousands of years of traditional use. It is intended for educational purposes only and is not intended to replace a visit to a medical professional where this is necessary.
If symptoms persist or re-occur, or if you are suffering from a serious medical condition, or if you are presently taking prescription drugs, we recommend that you consult a qualified doctor or practitioner before attempting to help yourself. Look for a practitioner/doctor who you can trust and who is prepared to explore natural health alternatives with you.
Pregnancy is a very special time. If chosen wisely herbs can give tremendous support throughout the entire process. However, due to the vulnerability and sensitivity of the unborn child it is especially important to make sure that the herbs you are using are safe. (This also applies during the time of breast-feeding as all substances ingested by the mother are processed and passed on with the mother's milk). Many herbs may be useful during the latter stages of pregnancy or during labour, but could be dangerous during the first few months. Inform yourself - don't risk regret.
