TINCTURES
Tinctures are alcoholic extracts of herbs. The alcohol content preserves the liquid and adds an antiseptic effect. Tinctures are more concentrated than water extracts (teas or decoctions), which means that a smaller amount is necessary to achieve a specific effect. Tinctures are also much less vulnerable to oxidization and thus retain their healing properties much longer than dried herbs or liquid extracts.
Our tinctures are prepared to different strengths with naturally fermented ethanol. The specified strength for each tincture indicates the relative amount of herb in relation to the alcohol content. The percentage quote refers to the strength of the alcohol used. Thus, a 1:5 - 25% strength tincture is prepared by using 1 part of plant material to 5 parts of 25% alcohol. Supplied in amber glass bottles.
USE
Tinctures are highly concentrated and thus extremely strong. Normally a small dose is sufficient to achieve the desired therapeutic effect. Some tinctures may be taken internally by diluting 1/4 - 1 tsp. of tincture in a glass of water. Others are only used externally as topical applications.
