Sarsaparilla Root

SARSAPARILLA ROOT
(Smilax ornata, S. officinalis)

History and Folklore
Sarsaparilla is an herb of the New World. Following its discovery its reputation rapidly spread throughout Europe, due to the fact that it was hailed as a miracle cure for Syphilis. Unfortunately the claims were somewhat exaggerated as is often the case with so called miracles and it soon sunk into oblivion. At least in Europe. In the US it continued to be popular as a blood cleansing spring tonic and foaming agent for root beer. It was even 'official' in the US pharmacopoeia between 1820 and 1910. There are many types of Sarsaparilla, which mostly grow as thorny vines from the southern US throughout Mexico and as far south as northern South America. Indigenous people throughout these regions highly value Sarsaparillas for their healing powers. Beware: There is some confusion regarding this plant and another called 'Sasparilla', which belongs to the Ginseng family, but has been used medicinally for similar purposes.

Medicinal Uses:
Sarsaparilla is an excellent blood cleansing remedy that can be used as a supportive measure in numerous conditions. Skin conditions, such as psoriasis, dermatitis, eczema and even leprosy benefit from its liver and kidney cleansing properties, as do conditions such as rheumatism and arthritis and inflammatory autoimmune diseases. The Mayans and Aztecs used it for infectious illnesses that manifest as eruptive rashes and venereal diseases, such as gonorrhoea and syphillis. Sarsaparilla is also indicated for bronchial conditions, asthma and allergies. Indigenous healers even use it for the common cold. It is said to protect the liver and stimulate the kidneys, bind and excrete endotoxins and uric acid. In animal experiments it has been shown to protect and even reverse neurological degenerative effects of aging, which may indicate a possible use in conditions such as dementia and Alzheimers. Much has been claimed regarding its supposed testosterone content. The truth is that Sarsaparilla does not contain testosterone, but certain saponins and plant steroids, which has earned it its reputation as an energy enhancer and aphrodisiac. It has a general cleansing, tonic and alterative effect that has a very broad scope of application.

CAUTION
Due to the saponin content, large doses may cause gastrointestinal irritation or kidney disturbances. Sarsaparilla enhances the absorption of certain drugs and compounds, (e.g. Digitalis glycosides), while accelerating the elimination of hypnotic drugs. Thus it is advisable to consult your health professional if you are on prescription drugs as dosage requirements may be altered.

Magical Uses:
Sarsaparilla can be used as a magical cleansing tonic and stimulant.

CAUTION
We support the notion of taking responsibility for one’s own well being and thus strive to make all herbs available for use at your own discretion. It should be noted however, that not all herbs are safe to use in all circumstances. Special cautions may apply when suffering from certain medical conditions, when taking synthetic prescription drugs and during pregnancy. Research and familiarize yourself with any herb you intend to use and make sure you are aware of all special cautions that may apply. The information given here is based on thousands of years of traditional use. It is intended for educational purposes only and is not intended to replace a visit to a medical professional where this is necessary.
If symptoms persist or re-occur, or if you are suffering from a serious medical condition, or if you are presently taking prescription drugs, we recommend that you consult a qualified doctor or practitioner before attempting to help yourself. Look for a practitioner/doctor who you can trust and who is prepared to explore natural health alternatives with you.

Pregnancy is a very special time. If chosen wisely herbs can give tremendous support throughout the entire process. However, due to the vulnerability and sensitivity of the unborn child it is especially important to make sure that the herbs you are using are safe. (This also applies during the time of breast-feeding as all substances ingested by the mother are processed and passed on with the mother’s milk). Many herbs may be useful during the latter stages of pregnancy or during labour, but could be dangerous during the first few months. Inform yourself - don’t risk regret.
